Areas of Expertise

In addition to general counselling, the following areas of expertise are most common to my clients.

Counselling Style

I use a number of different counselling styles and strategies to help you find the change you are looking for. Taken together, my approach to counselling is simply: identify the issues, find the easiest means for change and activate the core values that will drive motivation for you.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) focuses on your present situation and helps you identify ways to move forward quickly by developing achievable, effective goals. It emphasizes finding practical solutions to problems by exploring your existing strengths, resources, and abilities, rather than talking extensively about the problem itself, as is common in more traditional forms of therapy. In examining our current problems, we often see patterns from the past. The origins of a problem and its underlying meaning are not discussed in depth, as this problem is unlikely to re-occur once new habits and behaviours are begun.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a short-term form of psychotherapy based on the understanding that an individual’s thoughts and emotions influence their behaviours. The primary goal of CBT is to help clients recognize and challenge unhelpful or maladaptive patterns of thinking or behaving and develop healthier ways of responding to difficult situations. It focuses on addressing current concerns through the easiest means instead of trying to force change where it is most unlikely to work.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) integrates mindfulness practices with cognitive behavioural therapy to help individuals become more aware and accepting of their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. By developing this awareness and acceptance, MBCT aims to strengthen resilience and increase life enjoyment.

Existential Therapy

Existential therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the client’s lived experience and subjective reality, with the goal of helping individuals use their freedom to create authentic and fulfilling lives. Existentialist traditions emphasize that people are fundamentally free to shape their lives and are responsible for their choices, even when facing difficult circumstances. From this perspective, distress related to existential concerns such as death, isolation, freedom, and the search for meaning is viewed not as pathological, but as a natural part of the human condition that can encourage individuals to live more authentically. Existential therapy therefore prioritizes understanding the client’s subjective world and lived experience rather than imposing authoritative interpretations of their thoughts or feelings. It also places less emphasis on standardized therapeutic techniques, instead favouring a collaborative and dialogical relationship based on authentic presence, openness, and mutual exploration. Additionally, existential therapy challenges reductionist approaches to mental health that attempt to explain psychological suffering solely through symptoms, diagnoses, or biological causes.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an action-focused form of psychotherapy that encourages clients to acknowledge and accept their thoughts and emotions rather than avoiding, suppressing, or fighting against them. ACT emphasizes that difficult emotions are helpful signals to indicate change is required in an area of our lives. By developing greater understanding of their experiences, clients learn to utilize challenges to improve their circumstances and ultimately end up with a more serene, fulfilling existence.

Serena Polt, RCC, MA, BEd, BSc

As a person with lifelong ADHD, I am uniquely able to help others living with ADD. I understand the unique challenges that we face and have personal experience applying effective strategies in my life.

It is my goal to help everyone lead a happier, more fulfilled life. Self-realization has been the force that has increased my life satisfaction the moat and I strive to share that with my clients. Through my education and years of experience working with others, I have seen how expertly guided action can make a difference in the lives of people from all walks of life.

I often work with clients repeatedly over the years. Generally, we work together to solve the current issues in their lives and end counselling when they are feeling happy, hopeful and confident. As clients continue to progress and grow, they often find new challenges in their expanded existences. At that time, we come back together and solve the new issues so that they can continue their process of self-actualization.
